SG Anti-Microbial Glass Powder

Product Information

Anti-microbial glass powders are finely ground silicate, borosilicate, or phosphate glass matrices doped with antimicrobial ions and engineered to inhibit or kill microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and sometimes viruses. They are created by incorporating antimicrobial agents-such as silver, copper, zinc, or tin ions-into the glass structure during manufacturing. The resulting powders can be added to coatings, plastics, paints, or other materials to provide long-lasting antimicrobial protection

How They Work:

  • Ion Release: When in contact with moisture, the glass powder releases antimicrobial ions (e.g., Ag, Cu², Zn²) or alters the local environment (such as increasing pH), disrupting microbial cell membranes and metabolic processes, which inhibits growth or kills the microbes
  • Durability: Many formulations are designed to be water-insoluble or non-leaching, so the antimicrobial effect is long-lasting and safe for applications involving direct contact with water or food

Benefits:

  • Broad-spectrum antimicrobial action (effective against bacteria, molds, and fungi)
  • Long-lasting protection (does not wash away or degrade easily)
  • Non-toxic and biocompatible (safe for human contact and use in medical or food-related products)
  • Prevents odors, discoloration, and contamination caused by microbial growth
  • Can be engineered for specific applications (e.g., non-leaching for water- contact surfaces)

Uses:

  • Coatings and paints for walls, appliances, and public spaces
  • Additives in plastics for consumer products, medical devices, and food packaging
  • Healthcare and medical devices to reduce infection risk on high-touch surfaces
  • Construction materials (tiles, countertops, glass panels) for hygienic environment
  • Textiles and filtration materials for antimicrobial fabrics and filters
